Information Architecture Institute Australia (IAIA) was founded in 2008 to further the profession of information architecture in Australia. The IAIA is a non-profit association, registered in the state of Victoria.

Statement of Purpose

The IAIA supports information architects (IAs) working in Australia.

Information architects perform an important specialised role in the production of digital content. IAIA’s role is to raise public awareness of information architecture.

Similar to architects in the building industry, information architects design the structural and navigational systems of digital products to ensure their usability and effectiveness.

IAs produce designs based on user centred-design principles and test the resultant products to ensure they meet both usability and accessibility standards.

Their work includes:

  • Conducting audience profiles (personas)
  • Classifying, ordering and managing digital content
  • Defining search systems
  • Advising appropriate media and platform options
  • Structuring digital environments
  • Designing navigation and signage (including visual elements)
  • Specifying user interactions
  • Testing (heuristic analysis, card sorting, user trial, etc)
  • Auditing existing interactive media products

The digital content may include data, information and knowledge.

An information architect works across all media (text, audio and visual) and platforms (desk top computers, mobile devices – ipods, phones, etc).

Membership

The IAIA is a membership organisation for information architects. People who are primarily working in the areas above are invited to join.  Contact us at iaia@iaia.org.au
